about

The debut album from Berlin based band SisterButterFly

People have remarked that the music of SisterButterFly is reminiscent of Glam Rock, Bowie, Punk, Ian Brown, Joy Division, Iggy Pop; lots of disparate comparisons. So what do you do when you don't have the right description to inform people of what you do ? Give it a new one of course! And so 'Diamond Pop' was born.

Diamond Pop (noun). A genre relating to a style incorporating the glitz of Glam, the attitude of Punk, the addictive melodies of Pop Music and the harmonious incorporation of other styles within one genre. And created to describe the songs and image of the band SisterButterFly

Musically each song has its own style and by the time each song is played live it has gone through a number of development stages.

Mark Standley and Otto Bond provide the music and lyrics in a latter-day L.A. and Manchester/Arty collaboration that fuses the California punk background of Otto and Mark's own UK punk history.

Both found a paragon and genius in David Bowie whose influence is firmly tucked into the body of the play-list, but each also have a myriad of diverse musical observations that fold continually into the mix. So now you have met the SisterButterFly parents, let's have a look at how a song is born.

Firstly, each newborn is brought into the rehearsal room where it is patted and bounced into healthy proportions by Tom Petersen, a drummer (and on occasion songwriter) of much talent, improvisational skills and many years of explosive, percussive experience. Parents then pass Baby to Aunties 3

Ana Lena adds just the right amount of bass to knit the elements together. Now Baby can toddle around quite happily without support. Aunties Mandie Minx and 3M add aesthetics like mittens and Baby's bonnet (of the military variety of course!).

The final stage in the new-born's development is to be taken to the private studio of Mark Standley. It is there tweaked, twiddled and teased into a form that you can bear to listen to over and over.

Taking his production influences from, amongst others Brian Eno, George Martin, Joe Meek and Arthur Mullard. And before you can say Coochie Coo! we have a stomping tune, complete with its own identity but with a strong family resemblance.
